The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Lafayette is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in Lafayette, Louisiana. The cathedral is the seat of the Diocese of Lafayette and the mother church of the diocese. The cathedral was built in 1821 and is one of the oldest Cathedrals in the United States. The Cathedral is also one of the few remaining Gothic Revival style Cathedrals in the country.
The Cathedral has a long and rich history dating back to the early 19th century. In 1803, Louisiana was purchased by the United States from France as part of the Louisiana Purchase. In 1808, the first Catholic Mass was celebrated in Lafayette at the home of Judge Jacques Dupre. In 1811, construction began on St. John’s Church, which would become the first permanent church building in Lafayette. In 1821, St. John’s Church was consecrated and became a cathedral.
The Cathedral has undergone several renovations and expansions over the years. In 1884, a new Gothic Revival style façade was added to the front of the cathedral. In 1966, a new pipe organ was installed in the cathedral. In 2001, a $1 million dollar renovation project was completed which added an elevator, new heating and cooling systems, and made other improvements to the cathedral.
